Community projects and engagement

Kodal is continuing to work with the local community to prioritise a community development programme that will jointly establish priority community development projects and identify how Kodal can provide support for these initiatives.

As part of initial planning, Kodal has finalised the refurbishment of local access roads, utilising Malian contractors. The development of these existing roads in the project area has improved conditions for the local community as well as upgraded access to the Ngoualana deposit for the site development activities.

Kola-Sokoura School

Kodal has provided funding assistance for the employment of a full time teacher at Kola-Sokoura, the village closest of the Bougouni mine site, which has been without a teacher for some time.

To further support he school, Kodal has also provided school kits, including books and stationery.

The handover ceremony was attended by the communal authorities of Kola, the school administration of Bougouni (CAP) and the people of Kola-Sokoura. On the sidelines of the launch, 105 seedlings were planted in and around the schoolyard.

Farming

In March 2024, Kodal also donated a number of tractors to the local community at Bougouni, which will help locals in their everyday farming activities, fertilise and sow crops and transport their produce to the local towns for sale.

Often these activities are done on hand and foot and the provision of a modern tractor is a huge boost to the local farmers and will help increase productivity.  Providing direct help to local communities is a core part of our targeted and practical ESG strategy for Bougouni.

Water

The company also recently replaced the local solar-powered water pump, which supplies water to at Ngoualana Village (near Bougouni Project) in an initiative headed by Jerry Gao, Kodal’s Operations Manager.

The pump was inoperable for several months, with locals forced to walk 4km for water. To resolve this, Kodal ordered a replacement water pump and additional solar capacity which it installed in April 2024.
