Responsibly addressing the global energy transition whilst delivering positive socio-economic outcomes for the people of Mali
Bougouni presents an opportunity to mine and produce Lithium that will help drive the renewable energy transition, being widely used in many green technologies.
The development of Bougouni has strong support from the Mali Government and within the local community, and the Company has commenced the upgrade of local infrastructure in preparation for major development activities to commence on site.
Kodal is mindful of its responsibilities as a developer and the company is committed to operating responsibly in line with international sustainability expectations.
Currently at the exploration stage of the Company’s mine life cycle, current focus is on social rather than environmental aspects. We have engaged with the Mali government and local communities to adapt our planned approach to consider their comments and suggestions. And although we have been granted a formal legal licence we also need the goodwill of the local community to operate near Bougouni, it is important to continue to manage these social aspects throughout the lifecycle of our Bougouni project, to minimise disruption, provide job opportunities and support local social projects.
Our developments are informed by recognised industry standards and our future operational performance will be aligned to leading international benchmarks such as IFC and ICMM.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has established a set of Performance Standards that define the responsibilities of clients for managing environmental and social risks.
These standards are designed to help avoid, mitigate, and manage risks and impacts as a way of doing business in a sustainable way.
The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) is an organization that aims to enhance sustainable development in the mining and metals industry. ICMM has developed a set of sustainability standards that its member companies commit to implementing as part of their operational practices. These standards are outlined in ICMM’s Sustainable Development Framework, which includes a set of guiding principles and performance expectations such as environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and corporate governance.
ICMM members also commit to supporting certain global standards, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, and the Paris Agreement on climate change.
